Overview

Edenton North Carolina is located on the Albemarle Sound and Edenton Bay in Chowan county. The main roads to the town is located by US 17 and NC 32.

Main tourist attractions are the colonial homes and antebellum homes in Historic District. The town was founded in 1715. It has the largest collection of 18th century homes in the US. Some of Edenton's homes are listed with the National register of historic places and others are listed as National historic landmarks.

Brief History

The town was the first capital of the North Carolina colony. It was also an important inland port around the mid 1700s.

Edenton is famous for the Edenton Tea Party where a group of ladies rebelled against Britain's tea tax. It is the home of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and also the home of one of the signers of the Constitution.

Attractions

Historic Edenton State historic site is located at 108 North Broad St. Take guided walking and/or trolley tours of the town.

Baker Moore House is located at Broad St close to Edenton Bay. The house was built in 1782.

Edenton Museum is located at Broad St. The museum is also known as the Cupola House which was built in 1758. The Jacobean style home is the oldest home in Edenton.

Iredell house is located at East Church St. The house was built in 1773.

Chowan county Courthouse was built in 1767. next door is the Chowan County Jail which is the oldest jail still operating in the state.

St Pauls Episcopal Church is the 2nd oldest church in the state.

Chowan Arts council gallery is located at 200 East Church St. The art gallery exhibits of both local and national artists artwork.

Edenton National Fish Hatchery was established in 1899.

Edenton Marina is located at 604 West Queen St.

Tourist Attractions near Edenton

Plymouth NC is located at the mouth of the Roanoke River south of Edenton off NC 32 & US 64. It is 80 miles from the Outer Banks is centrally located on the state's coast.  Plymouth was the site of the 2nd largest Civil War battle and the last victory of the Confederacy. Vist the Port O Plymouth Civil War museum with information on the Civil war and exhibits. 

Pettigrew State Park is the largest state park in North Carolina and is located in Creswell near Plymouth. Inside the park is Lake Phelps (see below). There are picnic tables, piers, hiking trails and boating ramps. Go fishing, kayaking, canoeing and boating.

Lake Phelps is located in Pettigrew State Park off US 64. Lake Phelps is the 2nd largest freshwater lake in the state. It is a large shallow lake (8ft deep) Go fishing, boating, picniking, hiking, bird watching. Fish for game fish like largemouth bass, yellow perch, chaNel catfish, white catfish, bluegill, more.

Somerset Place State Historic Site is located at Creswell NC south of Edenton on Lake Phelps. Plantation home built in the late 1700 s. The plantation features period furniture. On the premises are the kitchen, smokehouse, icehouse, colony house, bathhouse, overseer's house, plantation slave records, cemetery. guided tours are available.

Hope Plantation is located at Windsor NC off NC 308 west of Edenton. The Plantation home built in 1803. The plantation features period antiques. On the same grounds is King Bazemore house built 1763 of handmade brick.
