The town was the first capital of the North Carolina colony. It was also an important inland port around the mid 1700s.

Lake Phelps is located in Pettigrew State Park off US 64. Lake Phelps is the 2nd largest freshwater lake in the state. Somerset Place State Historic Site is located at Creswell NC south of Edenton on Lake Phelps. Plantation home built in the late 1700 s. The plantation features period furniture. On the premises are the kitchen, smokehouse, icehouse, colony house, bathhouse, overseer's house, plantation slave records, cemetery. guided tours are available.
Hope Plantation is located at Windsor NC off NC 308 west of Edenton. The Plantation home built in 1803. The plantation features period antiques. On the same grounds is King Bazemore house built 1763 of handmade brick.Edenton Hotels
