Bentonville Battleground State Historic Site is the site of the last major battle of the civil war that took place in March 1865. The battleground is located in Johnston county near Newton Grove off US 701 SR 1008. There is a visitors center with exhibits. The Harper House, on the grounds, served as a field hospital for both the Confederacy and Union cemetery.
Charles B Aycock Birthplace State historic site is located in Fremont NC north of Goldsboro off US 117 SR 1542. The historic site is the birthplace of the 12th governor of NC elected in 1900. There is a 19th century farmhouse. Governor Aycock is noted for improving public education
