Lake James is one of 9 man made lakes constructed along the Catawba River by Duke Power. It was named for the founder of Duke Power, James B. Duke. Lake James was constructed between 1916-1923. It is 1200 feet above sea level.

• Hidden Cove  Access area - southwest of Dam
• Linville River Access area - north side of lake
• Canal Bridge access area - Northeast of dam
• North Fork access area

Linville Falls recreational area is nearby on the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile marker 316.3
