Mt Airy N.C is located in Surry County North Carolina just over the Virginia state line and is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The town is accessible via US 52 north west of Winston Salem, US 89 and I-77 Mount Airy is in the North Carolina Piedmont area. Visitors Center - North Main Street Andy Griffith Museum with memorabilia from Mayberry and Matlock TV shows. Mount Airy is Andy Griffith's hometown and is often referred to as Mayberry. In downtown Mt. Airy (Main St) you will find Floyd's City Barber Shop, the Snappy Lunch (famous for Pork Chop sandwiches), the Old Mayberry Jail. There is a Mayberry Patrol car that has tours available which will take you around to all the Andy Griffith highlights of the town. Andy Griffiths childhood home is now a B&B next door to the Hampton Inn. mt.airy - nicknamed Granite city for the largest open faced granite quarry. Granite used in many national monuments has come from this quarry.
Pilot Mountain State Park - Pinnacle NC - US 52 - Surry and Yadkin counties - 2420 ft - picnic grounds, campsites, hiking trails, horseback riding trails, canoeing, fishing, - open year round. No climbing allowed. Stone Mountain State Park in Roaring Gap N.C - 45 minutes from Mt Airy. Largest open face Granite quarry Hanging Rock State Park - Danbury NC, Stokes County - 15 miles east of Pilot Mountain - camping, cabins, swimming, hiking, picnic areas. 3 rock faces: Hanging Rock, Cooks Wall and Moore's Knob. You can climb Cook' Wall and Moore's knob but you cannot climb Hanging Rock. Waterfalls, horse trails, boating - open all year round. Man made lake with a bathhouse, sandy beach and rowboats available for rent. Mt Airy museum of regional history Andy Griffith Playhouse (use to be the school Andy Griffith attended) Trinity Episcopal Church - first of 6 granite churches built and the Church Jeb Stuart and his family attended. Two of Jeb Stuart's sisters were married here. 1799 Edward Franklin house - Low Gap NC holds the Sonker Festival first Saturday in October. Horne Creek Farm - living historical farm - late 19th and early 20th century tobacco farm. Gertrude Smith House victorian house built 1903 Village of Rockford - historic landmark The Old North State Winery - restaurant and winery. Shelton vineyards - wine tasting and tours of the grounds, gift shop, concerts, handcrafted cheeses and more. Events and Festivals Yadkin Pumpkin Festival Piedmont Berry Festival Sonker Festival - Sonker is an Appalachian term for a deep dish Fruit pie or cobbler. Pies and old time music. Quilting demonstrations an exhibit of Confederate arms, uniforms, knives and more. Pilot Mountain's Mayfest Mayberry Days - festival held in late September. Autumn leaves festival - October Annual Mount Airy Bluegrass and Old time fiddlers convention held in June Annual corn husking event at Horne Creek in October Famous People from Mount Airy Tommy Jarrell - Fiddler Donna Fargo - Country Singer Eng and Chang Bunker - Siamese Twins, married sisters from Mt Airy, lived in White Plains (near Mt. Airy) and buried at White Plains Baptist Church. Jeb Stuart - Famed General of the Confederate Cavalry, born in Laurel Hill in Ararat Virginia 5 miles north of Mt. Airy. see below. Andy Griffith - actor famous for the Andy Griffith Show (Mayberry), Mat Locke, No time for Sergeants and more. There is a statue in Raleigh NC and Mt Airy to Andy. Nearby Attractions: Jeb Stuart birthplace: Laurel Hill is the birthplace of Jeb Stuart. The home burnt to the ground in 1859 and was never rebuilt. There is a marker where the house and separate kitchen stood. A small cemetery for the slaves that worked the plantation. Another small cemetery for Jeb Stuart's sister, brother and another family member. There are picnic tables. Inside the visitor center are Civil war memorabilia and lots of information. Civil War reenactment held on the first weekend of October. Civil War area costumes are worn by people participating in the reenactment. The reenactment battle lasts about an hour. There is a field hospital set up and demonstrations of life during the Civil war.
Cheau Morrisette is a winery with a very good restaurant. It is located North of Mount Airy via the Blue Ridge Parkway and close to Mabry Mill. You can eat on outside on the terrace with a beautiful view of the mountains. They have tours of the winery. Mabry Mill is located in the Meadows of Dan Virginia Floyd County and is about 30 to 45 minutes from Mt Airy. The Mabry Mill was built about 1910 by Edwin Mabry. The Mill was in operation until 1936. The National Park Service restored the Mill in 1945. Most photographed Mill in the world. There are demonstrations of rural Appalachian life, buildings and farm implements. There is also a gift shop.
