Tryon Palace
Tryon Palace was the home of the Royal governor William Tryon. It was designed by architect John Hawkes. Tryon Palace is a Georigian style Manson. In 1770, Governor Tryon was appointed governor of New York. Royal Governor Josiah Martin took his place as North Carolina governor. In 1775, governor Martin was forced to flee by patriots. In 1777, the NC General assembly convened at Tryon Palace. In 1798 a fire destroyed the main building. Reconstruction began in 1939 and in 1959 Tryon Palace opened to the public. Tours are available. There are over 7000 art pieces and 18th and 19th century antiques
Colonial Revival Gardens
These gardens were designed by Marley Jeffers Williams who is an expert in 18th century landscaping.
Example gardens are: Latham Garden, Green Garden, Kellenberger garden and Kitchen garden.
They contain ornamental plants, hedges, vegetables and more examples of 18th century landscaping.
