Swansboro NC is a fishing village with antique and craft shops. The Major road to and from Swansboro is NC 24. Catch the ferry here to the Outer banks islands here. Swansboro is located at the  southern Outer Banks but is on the mainland. Swansboro is close to  Emerald Island, Bogue Inlet , Bear Island, Shark Tooth Island and Huggins Island. Hammock's Beach State Park is located off  SR1511 (state road 1511). Hammock's Beach State Park is partly on the mainland near Swansboro but most of the park is on Bear Island, a barrier island. Bear Island is undeveloped and isolated.

Northeast of Hammocks beach is Bogues Inlet, Bogues sound

Southwest of Hammocks Beach is Bear Inlet and Brown Island.

Nearby also is Oracoke Inlet, Core Sound and the Cape Fear River

There is a visitor center, park office, lifeguard, bathhouse with restrooms and showers, boat ramps (restricted check with Park ranger before launching a boat), Loggerhead turtle nesting area (summer), Intracoastal waterway.

Bear Island is accessible by ferry or private boat only. about a 25 minute ride from the mainland
